The temperatures only continue to rise in the Phoenix area and it can be hard to try and beat the heat in the valley of the sun. Fortunately, there are many great places not far from Phoenix in the northern part of the state with much cooler temperatures. There is always plenty to do and since these places are an easy drive, it is the best way to escape the triple digits!
Just a couple of hours from the valley, you can find Flagstaff, where the temperatures are usually 25 degrees cooler! This makes for the perfect weather to enjoy a hike. In fact, Flagstaff is home to Arizona’s tallest mountain, Humphrey’s Peak, offering gorgeous views of the area. There are also great breweries and places to grab a bite to eat. Even if it’s just a few hours away, it is a great place to make a weekend trip and explore all of the hiking trails, shopping, golf courses and lively nightlife that call Flagstaff home. You can even take a jeep tour to really get to know the woodland areas of Flagstaff.
Just a little closer to Phoenix and not far from Flagstaff is Sedona. It is only about 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix, but it is a great place to visit during the summer months. And since you can get there in under 2 hours, it is the perfect spot for a day trip! With fun New Age shops and art galleries throughout the town, there is plenty to do in Sedona. There are also great spas that you can spend the weekend at, as well as hiking trails. You can also take the time to explore Red Rock State Park and catch some bird watching. After hiking the beautiful landscapes of Sedona, you can enjoy some local breweries and wineries. The town is surrounded by pine forests, making it a beautiful place to escape the warm days of the valley.
In Williams, you can see highs in the low 80s in the middle of July, where we will most likely be seeing 110 and over in Phoenix. Williams is such a beautiful place that really gets overlooked and shouldn’t. It is the perfect camping destination for the weekend with delicious restaurants that have been in business for over 100 years. You can also enjoy ziplining through the forest or visit the famous Pete Route 66’s Gas Station Museum. Or you can enjoy the sites at Bearizona Wildlife Park. There is really a lot to do with gorgeous temperatures and weather!
Not far from Sedona is the little mining town of Jerome, located in central Arizona. Although it isn’t far from Phoenix, it is a little cooler in the summer than what we see in the city. The town is full of places that are known to be haunted and is a great spot to explore with all of their wineries and art galleries.
